GLOOP 2023

GLOOP is a ongoing work from 2022- Presented in different forms at spaces like Galleria Huuto in Helsinki, the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki and at the Visual Arts Festival Utopias Lahti.

The material process starts with me collecting washed up seaweed from the beaches near my apartment. I then discreetly ride public transit with a big mysterious bucket full of seaweed to bring it back to my studio. After sorting the seaweed I usually find small critters taking refuge in the slimy twines; I return the little bugs to the sea in my bucket. I often take multiple trips going back and forth from my studio and the beach, resulting in an almost ritualistic performance. It is quite a funny feeling carrying seaweed through the shopping centre of Kamppi to change the connection from metro to tram. I cook and blend the seaweed together with recycled fibres, pulp and other basic cooking ingredients. The result is a big mass of gloop. I spread the gloop out on the floor to let it dry for a week or so. The gloop is then used as a surface for photographic imagery. Resulting in sticky odorous handmade photographs.
